This Solgar product contains a soy concentrate with all the beneficial components found in soy: saponins, phytoestrogens, phytosterols and isoflavones.

Isoflavones are chemically very similar to estrogens, so, once in the body, they bind competitively to estrogen receptors, thereby inhibiting their action. High levels of estrogen have been shown to increase the risk of certain cancers (breast, prostate, uterus and colon).

It was found, therefore, that isoflavones have a beneficial action in preventing these cancers.

In addition to the actions mentioned above, isoflavones are potent antioxidants and anti-cholesterol agents. Saponins and isoflavones have an important protective effect on the cardiovascular system, especially genistein, as they inhibit thrombus formation and platelet aggregation, decrease cholesterol levels and increase vasodilation of atherosclerotic arteries.

Isoflavones can also be used to prevent the effects of menopause, including osteoporosis since in cases where there is no longer sufficient production of estrogens, isoflavones act as their substitutes. The effects of isoflavones at the level of osteoblasts are similar to those of estradiol in terms of alkaline phosphatase activity. Genistein reduces bone loss in both compact and trabecular bone, by increasing plasma levels of osteocalcin.
