The gilbardeira has recognized properties as a therapeutic aid to promote blood circulation, namely to the brain and extremities of the upper and lower limbs, improving peripheral circulation. As the gibbar reinforces blood vessels and capillaries, it is used to treat varicose veins. The gilbardeira is also useful in case of atherosclerosis (prevents hardening of the arteries), and for symptoms associated with poor blood circulation: feeling of sore and heavy legs, cramps, swelling and itching in the legs, associated with cutaneous trophic changes.

It is also recommended in case of hemorrhoids. It is traditionally used to relieve digestive and urinary symptoms related to gallstones, constipation and fluid retention, being beneficial as a laxative and as a diuretic, increasing urine flow and reducing swelling.
