Astaxanthin 5mg 30 Soft Capsules - Solgar
Solgar Astaxanthin 5mg 30 Soft Capsules
Food supplement for antioxidant protection.
Astaxanthin is a salmon pink carotenoid pigment, responsible for the color of salmon and flamingos, which, unlike most carotenoids, is of marine origin. This astaxanthin should not be confused with the synthetic astaxanthin, which is often added to salmon farms to acquire a pink color. The use of synthetic astaxanthin is indeed controversial and the European Community intends to implement rules for its use.
The astaxanthin used by Solgar comes from Haematococcus pluvialis, an algae that grows on the Hawaiian coast.
As a xanthophilic carotenoid, it does not convert to vitamin A. However, it has broad antioxidant properties, due to its polar structure (hydro and fat soluble), being a very versatile antioxidant.
It has antioxidant properties 10 times higher than beta-carotene and between 80 and 550 times higher than vitamin E, effectively protecting against damage caused by free radicals, acting at the level of cellular protection, the visual, cardiovascular system, nerve functions and skin.
This ability is particularly interesting at the level of the central nervous system.
At the level of the visual system, due to the protection against free radicals, it acts to prevent problems associated with macular degeneration, caused by age and cataracts.
Ultraviolet rays, responsible for the production of free radicals, damage collagen and DNA, resulting in the early formation of wrinkles. One of the properties of astaxanthin is to offer strong protection against this type of rays, protecting the skin.
In addition, it improves cellular intercommunication and homeostasis, acts beneficially at the level of cell membranes, and consequently maintains the integrity of cells.
Due to its antioxidant potential, it prevents oxidation, being considered as a protective factor in the cardiovascular system. Preliminary studies indicate that astaxanthin has the ability to lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol levels. It also appears to help reduce blood pressure, possibly due to the influence of nitric acid, which acts as a mild muscle relaxant.
It inhibits 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme responsible for the transformation of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) into testosterone, being considered a good support for the prostate, since high levels of DHT are associated with its growth.
It is also associated with improved sperm mobility and, as such, contributes to increased fertility in cases of male infertility.
It reuses and strengthens the antioxidant potential of vitamin E, C, lutein, beta-carotene and glutathione.
