Solgar Skin, Nail and Hair Formula 120 Tablets

Therapeutic indications:

Hair, skin and nails are composed of connective tissue. This connective tissue is very important in our body, since it includes fibrous proteins in the skin, hair, nails, cartilage and bone.
Collagen is the component of connective tissue that gives it elasticity and strength. Structurally it is formed by proteins surrounded by mucopolysaccharides. These fibers, constituted by a triple helix, can stretch and shrink. The tendons are made up of parallel bands of collagen fibers.
Hair is made up of three types of proteins: keratin with little sulfur, proteins rich in sulfur and proteins rich in the amino acids glycine and tyrosine, some of which are rich in cysteine (an amino acid rich in sulfur). In this way, proteins rich in sulfur form a matrix that is inside the filaments formed by proteins that have a lower amount of sulfur.
The skin is also rich in keratin. The outer layer of the skin is composed of dead cells filled with sulfur-rich keratin. In addition to keratin, the skin also contains collagen, another molecule very rich in sulfur. Sulfur-rich amino acids are known to exert a stimulating action on collagen synthesis, being important in cases of skin regeneration and in cases of wounds and burns.
Nails are primarily formed by keratin. Keratin forms the extracellular matrix that connects nail cells. Sulfur, which exists in the amino acid cysteine, is the major component of keratin, comprising about 10% of the weight of the nail. Cysteine forms sulfur bridges (disulfide bridges) that play an important role in stabilizing keratin. Cysteine is therefore responsible for the strength and flexibility of the nail. A nail break is nothing more than the result of a weak union between the nail cells.
Sulfur is a component of collagen, and is essential in the formation of disulfide bonds. These bonds not only provide stability to the collagen molecule, but are also important in the bonding of the various collagen molecules, in the formation of triple helices. These structures do not form, until all disulfide bonds are made. MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), a sulfur-rich organic compound, is an excellent source for collagen synthesis. MSM, is a compound that occurs naturally in nature, namely in a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and cereals, as well as in animals and man, although in lower quantities. MSM can also be found in the medicinal plant mackerel. Collagen also contains two specialized amino acids, hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine. These are formed by the modification of proline and lysine respectively, after collagen synthesis. Vitamin C is thus an essential element for the occurrence of this modification, and the collagen triple helix does not form until all amino acids have been modified. Silicon dioxide plays an important role in the formation of collagen since it is necessary for enzymes that intervene in the synthesis of collagen. In cases where there is a deficiency of silicon dioxide, there is a decrease in collagen synthesis.
Zinc is also important and necessary in the synthesis of collagen since it facilitates the connection of collagen fibers to the protein matrix that surrounds it, in the tendons.
Lithothanium corelloides, is a rare, red coral algae, very rich in calcium carbonate, which has the particularity of being easily absorbed by the human body. Calcium is a fundamental mineral for the metabolism of our entire body, especially for the strengthening of our skeleton (where 99% of this mineral is concentrated). In addition to building bones and teeth, it is also important in strengthening hair and nails.
